I'm enjoying the book. Very well written. Lots of details about the cameras and written in a very easy to understand way for us that don't know much about photography. There is an updated version with additional info about the latest firmware update and new members of the NEX family (C3 and 5N).
Mr. Friedman's writing is very conversational but to the point and not only does he fully explain the NEX 3&5 completely but gives his opinions about certain modes within the shooting experience. I like this, I don't like that. Friedman gives the reader some good grounding in light, composition, file types, DVD, HD, etc, and devotes a chapter on the Sony software (PMB). A wonderful bit of work. This book could be used with any camera. By the way, I downloaded this book from his web site, [..] in pdf form for $23.00.
I'm only 3 chapters into this book, but I'm very impressed with it, thus far. The book, at least in my case, seems perfectly targeted to beginners ie. the point and shoot crowd who sets everything to auto. This is my first DSLR (I'm sure for the the hard core consumerist will disagree, but considering the specs on this camera, it's close enough to a DSLR camera) and I had very little knowledge on where to start beyond the intelligent auto mode.
The book did an excellent job in explaining the basics, the features, and how to use the myriad options the camera has to offer. Layman terms are used to describe a lot of the techniques without overwhelming the reader with too much acronyms or technical jargon.
I'm already appreciating my NEX-5 more now that I understand how to use it better. If you're new to the DSLR crowd or just thinking of upgrading from a P&S camera and don't want to deal with bulky SLR cameras, I highly recommend buying the NEX and this book. BTW, you can get this book for a fraction of a paper book if you order it as a PDF from the author's website.
This would have been a fabulous manual in its original color form, but this is copied in black and white. Many pages show the differences between the same photo taken with different settings; in the b&w version, they are all an identical shade of gray. Nothing can be learned from the different settings. I've very disappointed.
Excellent book. It goes over the principles of the Sony Nex 5n and also it provides tips for beginners like me.
This is great book. I learned a lot from it. Only regret is that it's in Black and White and not color.
